Week 4 Peer Proofreading Exercise

In following Master Williams' example, I figured I'd post my proofreading assignment on my blog as well. The proofreading methods described in the notes post from Mr. Brandon were a bit strange when trying them, but strangely effective, as well. I proofread three students' essays, consisting of Heath Upton, Dan Bialecki, and Zach Potilechio.

Heath's Week 3 Essay

With Heath's essay, I tried note number 2: reading the essay backwards. It felt strange, but it helped me look at just the words and not the sentences. Heath has a lot of names of devices and foreign people in this essay, so that made it a bit strange trying to read it backwards (not that thats a problem at all), and I only caught a couple of mistakes, such as a misplaced space or "know" that was supposed to be "known". Overall a great essay.

Dan's Week 3 Essay

For Dan's essay, I experimented with number 5 on the list: printing the essay out, and reading it, while using a pen to make marks of mistakes and such. Using this method was a bit of an overkill; seeing as this is a college class, almost everyone should know about spelling and grammar, and I really didn't have alot to edit, except for "Internet" should be capitalized, a common mistake that I almost always make. Also, I believe tic-tac-toe has hyphens in between the tic, tacs, and toes, but I don't think thats a requirement. Overall, a great essay. Programming is not my cup of tea, per say, even though its involved in my major, but it was still a very interesting read.

Zach's Week 3 Essay

For Zach's essay, I decided to use number 13: using a piece of paper to isolate sentences. This method takes forever, but its extremely precise, and makes it hard to miss alot of the primary spelling and grammar mistakes. Having done this, I did catch a couple of grammatical mistakes that the spell checker didn't, such as in line 1, "write" should be "wrote". Having said that, it was a very well-written essay, and easy to understand. I especially liked how Zach imagined what each material's part was in the final product, and it made sense, so kudos for that. Looking forward to getting those epic goggles on my hunter, when I get him to 70 (t'will be my fourth). B)
